For the second year in a row, the Skehan Award (for 2016) was awarded to an outstanding contributor from the Ithaca area. Kevin Vallely has been a coach and swimmer for over 20 years. He continues to display remarkable leadership qualities and remains an inspiring figure in the world of masters swimming, as he teaches adults how to swim, improve, and stay fit. Thank you Kevin! Pictured below is Kevin with some of his swimmers who competed at the Ithaca Short Course Yards meet in December:

There were 1,200+ swimmers from over 150 clubs in attendance for this five day event: the 2016 USMS Summer Nationals in Mt. Hood, Oregon this August. The summer Nationals is always done in a Long Course Meters setting. A few swimmers from Niagara made it out to the meet...

Fairport Area Swim Team Masters came in 36th place for Men's Team scores. Binghamton University Masters Swimming (BUMS) came in 59th place for Women's Team scores.

Dorothy Tourtual (BUMS) scored in four of her five events in the Women's 65-69 age group, highlighted by two silver medals: 800 free (2nd), 400 IM (2nd), 100 free (4th), and 200 breast (5th). With split times included, Dorothy broke eight Niagara LMSC records.

Greg Danner (FAIR) scored in all five of his events, winning the Men's 200 fly, 200 IM, 400 IM, and 800 free in the 35-39 age group. His fifth swim yielded a silver in the 100 fly. He broke the Niagara records in each of those events.

Scott Doescher (FAIR) placed 18th in the Men's 45-49 age group, after being out of the water for 30 years. The Rochester Democrat & Chronicle recently published an article about Scott's return to the pool as part of his recovery from prostate cancer just four months ago. You can read that article here:
