The 2013 USMS 2-mi Cable Swim Open Water National Championship were held on August 17th in the Adirondack LMSC. Niagara had a very strong showing, with 18 members participating in the event. Dana Gianniny (W 40-44) and Kay Simonson (W 50-54) each won their age group. The relay composed of Meega Wells, Kay Simonson, Gerry Gould, and Robert Webber won the Mixed 45+ relay.

In other news: Cleveland, Ohio played host to the National Senior Games in late July. Niagara LMSC members Stefanena Kysor and Irene D'Agostino both swam six events in the 85-89 age group and performed at a very high level. Stefanena won two events (50, 100 breast) and placed top three in the other four (50 fr, 100 back, 200 back). Irene came in 2nd place in four events (500 free, 100 IM, 200 IM, and 50 fly). Nazareth Masters will be hosting a meet at their facility for the third consecutive year. Sunday, October 6th is the day for the meet. Swimming at a short course meters pool is a great way to mix things up! We've had 27 USMS Top Ten swims at that pool in the first two years. The meet entry form is posted in the Calendar section.

On a related note, the 2013 Top Ten listing for short course yards has just been published. Niagara swimmers made the list 42 times, which is our most number of entries since 2005! USMS Summer Nationals were held in Mission Viejo, California, home to one of the most storied programs in USA Swimming & Diving. The Nadadores program has sent at least one athlete to each Olympics dating back to 1976. They last held Nationals there in 2005.

Niagara LMSC had two representatives at the meet:

  • Priscilla Modrov won all four of her events in the 25-29 age group, easily breaking each of the Niagara records, and shattering the Colonies Zone records in the 200 butterfly and 800 freestyle.
  • Randy Mayall finished in the top 8 in each of his five events in the 45-49 age group, breaking three Niagara records in the process.

All members should be aware that anyone can go to Nationals and swim up to three individual events, without meeting any qualifying times. The qualifying times are strictly for those athletes who want to do more than three events. You can read more, as described by the USMS Membership Director, Anna Lea Matysek:

The second annual Fire Island Ocean Swim in the Town of Islip, NY on July 20 had 1 mile, 5k and 10k events. The 5k event was designated as the Colonies Zone Open Water Championship event. Our very own Andrew Schaefer won the event, in a Zone record setting time of 1:24:48. Molly Brown came in 5th overall and won her age group with a time of 1:42.58. Both swimmers are members of the BUMS program.

The Niagara District is saddened to hear of the recent death of John Cranch on July 14, 2013, six days short of his 91st birthday. John competed actively in District, State and National meets, accumulating 81 Top Ten swims from 1987-2008 in short course yards, meters and long course meters. John also regularly competed in open water competition in the Rochester area. John was not only an excellent backstroke swimmer, but he competed in distance freestyle events as well, including the 400, 500, 800 and 1500. John last competed at age 86 in the 2008 Empire State Games, placing 1st in all 5 of his events. John still holds the 18 Niagara District records for backstroke and distance freestyle events in the 70-74, 75-79, 80-84 and 85-89 age groups.
